Abstract
The purpose of this document is to introduce the Internet Messaging Access Protocol (IMAP), discuss its relevance for both service providers and users. The paper provides examples of the kind of users who will benefit from the use of the IMAP protocol and will outline how overall system usage and loading is expected to be different from that of systems based on the traditional POP3 protocol.
